This module includes the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system, normal and abnormal findings of the respiratory system in your daily assessment, and a brief description of many of the common respiratory pathologies we see in the neonatal intensive care unit. It also includes two case scenarios that put into practice the learner’s understanding of the material.

This course has the goal of facilitating knowledge and confidence in the care of the newborn patient. Neonatal Respiratory Assessment is also used as a great orientation tool for nurses wishing to pursue a career in the field of Neonatology/Nursery.

TARGET audience
This module is designed as an orientation tool for nurses new to this population as well as a review for nurses who are currently working in the Newborn/Neonatal Sector.

Objectives

* Describe the basic anatomy and physiology of the newborn respiratory system
* Differentiate the typical and atypical findings in the newborn respiratory assessment
* Explain the physiology of gas exchange at the alveolar level
* Differentiate the signs and symptoms of newborn respiratory disease from those of newborn cardiac disease
* Describe the physiology, etiology and presentation of the newborn diagnosed with Respiratory Distress Syndrome
* Explain the typical signs, symptoms and care for the most common newborn respiratory diagnoses
* Discuss the importance of needle decompression and the use of chest tubes in tension pneumothorax
* Explain the three main structural anomalies related to the newborn airway
* Discuss the key features of mechanical respiratory support and nitric oxide
* Explain the usefulness of related tests, procedures and laboratory findings
* Integrate respiratory assessment techniques and critical thinking ability by the use of case scenarios
