Ground Transport Nursing

This module is designed for nurses who are interested in ground transport nursing. Transport nursing involves the transfer of emergency and non-emergency patients. This can range from a routine interfacility transport to emergency "scene calls" for trauma and medical emergencies. This course includes job description of the transport nurse, call choreography and key components to anticipation for the trip for the proper preparation for the patient’s safe transfer.TARGET audience
The learner should be an RN or Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) background with three to five years critical care or Emergency Room experience and be certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification (ACLS). Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification (PALS) and/or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) are also recommended if required. Ground Transport Nursing may be used as a great orientation tool for nursing wishing to pursue ground transport nursing. Neonatal Transport is offered in the Neonatal Sector.
Objectives
* Discuss the job description of a ground transport nurse.
* Identify the key components to anticipation for the proper preparation for the patient prior to transport.
* Identify the differences between flight and ground transport.
* Review the medications typically supplied in drug kits for transport
* Briefly discuss the equipment involved in transport nursing.
* Discuss the contraindications for ground transport
* Discuss the importance of performing a physical assessment before leaving the facility or scene, during he transport, and prior to the transfer of the patient to the new facility.
* Discuss documentation tips and techniques to consider for transport.
* Describe the choreography of a typical patient transfer and the importance of communicating with the MTCC (medical transport communication center).
* Discuss the importance of finishing touches caring for the family members
* Integrate physical assessment techniques and critical thinking ability by the use of presented transport case scenarios.
