This module includes a comprehensive guide to performing respiratory assessment. Respiratory Assessment features tips and methods to employ when performing airway assessment, lung auscultation and pulse Oximetry. Pneumothorax, chest tubes and care of the patient with a chest tube is offered. Signs and symptoms of abnormal findings are discussed and nursing interventions to avoid such complications are offered as well. This course has the goal of facilitating knowledge and confidence in the respiratory assessment and daily care of the patient.�
Objectives
• Explain methods used to distinguish normal and abnormal findings in the respiratory assessment and relate the findings to possible causes
• Describe components of the airway assessment
• Discuss indications for and methods used for airway protection
• Describe the lung sounds, recommended auscultation sites and possible causes for false sounds
• Explain pulse Oximetry and list tips to ensure accurate readings
• Define pneumothorax and describe the associated signs and symptoms
• Briefly discuss chest tubes and special indications for the care of the chest tube patient
• Explain abnormal respiratory findings and relate the findings to possible causes
• List nursing interventions to perform in order to avoid development respiratory complications
