This module includes a comprehensive guide to performing a head to toe physical assessment. This module features tips for efficient and effective interview skills as well as methods to employ when performing neurological, respiratory, circulatory, abdominal, and extremity assessment. Physical Assessment offers the fundamental principles in understanding ABG analysis, IV solutions and fluid and electrolyte imbalances. This course has the goal of facilitating knowledge and confidence in the physical assessment and daily care of the patient.
TARGET audience
This module is designed for nurses who are looking to become knowledgeable and more confident in their comprehension and approach to physical assessment. Physical assessment is a great orientation tool for new graduate nurses wishing to gain confidence in assessment skills, or as a refresher course for nurses re-entering the clinical arena.
Objectives
• Explain the purpose of physical assessment and identify the components of proper preparation
• Discuss methods and communication skills utilized in eliciting information from a patient during the physical assessment interview
• Describe the importance of building rapport with the family members
• Explain methods used to distinguish normal and abnormal findings in the neurological, respiratory, cardiac, and abdominal and extremities assessment and relate the findings to possible causes
• Describe the potential effects of medications and other components to consider when performing the physical assessment
• Discuss documentation tips and techniques to consider for physical assessment
• Describe the fundamental elements required in understanding Arterial Blood Gas Analysis
• Differentiate between hypotonic, isotonic and hypertonic intravenous solutions and list the indications for use
• Discuss the signs and symptoms associated with volume overload and/or dehydration of the patient
• and list the indications for use
• Relate the various electrolyte imbalances with the patient assessment and symptoms
