This module includes a comprehensive guide to extremity assessment. This learning activity identifies special populations at risk for skin break down, peripheral circulation assessment and edema and risk assessment for decubitus ulcers and tips to avoid skin breakdown. This course has the goal of facilitating knowledge and confidence in the physical assessment and daily care of the patient.
Objectives
• Identify the systems that are assessed during the extremity assessment
• Describe how mobility and patient care needs affect the extremity assessment
• Discuss special populations at risk for skin breakdown and list those at high risk for decubitus ulcers
• Explain how nutritional status and activity are related to the extremity assessment
• Discuss peripheral circulation assessment and the relation to peripheral edema and cast assessment
• List the indications for anti-embolic stockings
