This course serves as a comprehensive anatomy guide to gain confidence in Cardiac Assessment. This module includes a review of cardiac anatomy and physiology, the function of all parts, risk factors, history taking and interview techniques. Assessment tips and interventions for the patient with chest pain, common causes of chest pain, heart sounds and how the blood pressure works (preload and afterload) is also discussed. The author relates real life experiences at the bedside to the underlying physiology to promote the development critical thinking skills. Cardiac assessment will no longer be overwhelming upon completion of this module.

This course has the goal of facilitating knowledge and confidence in the care of the cardiac patient. Adult Cardiac Assessment is also used as a great orientation tool for nurses wishing to pursue a career in the cardiology, critical care or emergency nursing.

TARGET audience
This module is designed for nurses currently practicing in the cardiac arena, or as an orientation tool for nurses wishing to work in cardiology, critical care or emergency nursing. This course is also appealing to nurses who may be interested in increasing their confidence with cardiac assessment.

Objectives

* Describe the basic anatomy of the adult cardiac system
* Describe the functions of the layers of the heart
* Explain the structure of the heart and the chambers
* List the two different types of valves in the heart and the location
* Explain preload and afterload
* Describe how the blood pressure works
* Briefly discuss the heart sounds and extra heart sounds
* List the indications for interventions and tests
* Discuss the importance of history taking and cardiac risk factors
* Describe cardiac chest pain and list other common causes of chest pain
* Describe medications used for the treatment of cardiac chest pain
* Discuss basic ECG interpretation
* Integrate cardiac assessment techniques and critical thinking ability via case scenarios
